Winter Wonderland
Canada is a land of ever changing seasons. Each one has their own appeal. Winter has several that I can think of that warmer climates cannot boast.
Canada’s Winter Wonderland
Mountains and Foothills
A fresh blanket of powered snow calls skiers and snowboarders from offices, trucks, warehouses and stores. There is nothing better than a fresh powder snowfall and every truly dedicated skier or snowboarder anticipates that first snowfall as much as they do Christmas morning. Extreme sports lovers and winter sports lovers of every kind, can’t wait for winter and love those fresh snowfalls. Sure they make do with artificial snow made with these monstrous snow machines when they have to – but every single one will be - or will want to be - strapping on the boards the minute they see that fresh falling snow.
Lakes, Rivers, Ponds and Streams
You don’t know what you are missing if you have never had the opportunity to put on the skates and glide up and down a beautifully frozen lake. The best time is in the gloaming where colours and lights are muted and you see the world at its most magical. The snow is gently falling, the ice is like glass beneath your feet and your hands and heart are warmed because you have managed to sneak this little bit of time away from the world and you are holding the hand of your loved one as you speed over the frozen water into the sunset.
Canada The Cold
There is nothing like experiencing the crispness of the air on a cold clear Canada winter’s day. You know it’s cold not by the thermometer, but because your nostrils freeze shut and the teardrops that leak from the corner of your eyes instantly form ice droplets.
Winter Weather
Snow Reports
I recently saw a commercial where a woman was boasting her favorite TV show was the weather channel. In winter, many feel that way in reality. Our schedules are quite often determined by the weather, so we like to keep our eyes and ears open to know in advance, when possible, if we are going to have to change them, work from home, cancel a business trip, or make sure our friends are willing to brave the cold, wind, snow and freezing rain to keep a date. As mentioned, our winter sports lovers watch these reports and the ski resort reports as devoutly as you watch your favorite sitcom.
Snow Days
Children here quickly learn the radio can be their friend. It's common for children to peek out the window the minute they crawl out of bed. Especially if there have been grumblings about bad weather coming. There is always the hope they can crawl right back into their warm beds and catch up on the sleep they should have received the night before. They know mom is down in the kitchen listening to the "Snow Watch". And they know if they don't hear her coming up to get them once they have crawled back into bed that it's a pretty sure bet the "radio" has declared today a Snow Day!
Tobogganing
Imagine going to bed and it's relatively warm for a winter day (4 degrees Celsius). The roads are bare and the earlier snow of the week has melted because of a warm spell. Things are mucky and altogether yuk. But you wake up to a virtual winter wonderland. Everything is freshly blanketed in thick soft snow that has been falling all night.
Perfect conditions to bundle up and dig out the toboggans! You walk to the hills dragging the wooden toboggan with you. By the time you get to the top of the hill you have to stop for a moment to catch your breath and take in the view.
You position yourself at the front of the toboggan because it's the best spot, let your siblings fit themselves in behind you, with the oldest giving you a push start. And you are off! the speed is exhilarating! The world rushes by, snow flies in your face making it difficult to see, and your heart pumps faster as you hope you can steer clear of the trees and bumps.
The ride lasts about 1 minute, but it feels like 10. You jump up hooping and hollering and rushing to get back to the top to do it again. There is nothing like it.
Snow forts and snow fights
When else can you get away with throwing something at your sister without getting a swat for it? Of course, this should only be done after you have built the best snow fort and have a place to run and hide when she retaliates. It’s even better of course, when she is not prepared. You secretly sneak outside to build your fort while she is playing with her new toys, just so you can smack her a good one with the largest snowball ever! She will try to retaliate – but being the clever one, you have a place ready to run and hide in.

Snow Days for Parents
Snow Days are the days you remember fondly when you are younger. Not so much when you are older and feel it is your duty to try and get to work. Snow Days for parents often mean traveling in treacherous conditions. You bundle up, struggle to open the garage door, clatter around until you find the snow shovel and start to dig out your car. If you are lucky, this job is made a little easier with the use of a snow blower. With a sense of accomplishment you finish this labour and then watch in horror as the snow plough drives by plugging up the end of your driveway again!
By the time you are finished and are ready to brave the roads, it's almost time to come home. Don't laugh that happens! I have seen myself standing in the wind and cold arguing with myself for a good 10 minutes. The nostrils are frozen together so you have to breathe with your mouth open, which fogs up the glasses and adds a damp cover on the frozen teardrops in the corner of your eyes. After a wasted 10 minutes you shake yourself off and plop yourself behind the steering wheel cursing your sense of responsibility. You close your eyes, say a little prayer, and pull out into the slushy, salty roads. By the time you get to work you have to pry your hands off the steering wheel - only to discover that none of your coworkers have the same sense of responsibility that you do!

Traveling In A Winter Wonderland
Snowmobiling
For those who don't know what a snowmobile is, they are completely open machines that can travel at high speeds. They have tracks instead of tires and they travel over the snow. Canada is a great place if you love to snowmobile. We have routes meandering all over the country. It is possible to plan a trip, completely traveled on a snowmobile, and see almost the whole country. Of course, you would need more than one winter season to manage to do that - Canada is very large! We have places that are open only during the season where you can stop for a hot cocoa or stay for the night, enjoy a meal and continue on your way with a new sunrise.
Hay Rides
This is not to be confused with a Sleigh Ride which is described next. Hay rides are the best when you have a group of friends together. If you have the opportunity to try it - don't pass it up. Hay is loaded on a flat bed tractor and you actually sit on it while horses pull you through bumpy fields where corn stocks can still be seen sticking up through the thick snow. It's loads of fun having the hay sneak through all the layers you are wearing to prick your cold skin underneath. People often jump off and run along beside the riders - usually because their skin is irritated and often just downright sore! The fun escalates when the runners don't pay attention and run through some fresh and heady smelling horse droppings!
Like I said, if you have the opportunity to try one - it shouldn't be missed. Because now you know to take extra padding and you can be the one actually left on the hay and watching the antics of the others who are trying to pretend like they are having a good time.
Sleigh Rides
Fresh snow is the best time for a sleigh ride - a true sleigh ride - where the sleigh is actually a sleigh and not a carriage. You and your better half sit completely in the open air, and if it's done right you are snuggled together with a warm blanket over your laps, heated bricks for your feet to rest on, snow falling on your cold noses and a flask of brandy to share. Now that's my idea of romance!

Wow great hub my friend, Its nice to have snow on Christmas and It is a wonderland for sure :)
Wouldn't trade the weather here for anything, (75 today) but the toboggans did bring back some warm memories. Nice hub, thanks.
I totally laughed out loud at some of this. I totally remember white knuckling it to clinicals in nursing school and being the only one who showed up. I especially hated digging out and then the snow plow coming by and starting all over again. Thanks for the laugh and bringing to mind some fond memories. Great article!
great hub, duchess.
i love the last foto of the car, hopefully transporting snow my way!
great job!
wow. I wd love the snow and the freezing temperatures, and the skiing and skating and tobagonning. Here in Malta, we never have snow. Our winter is mild, not really cold. We had an almost summery Christmas here, twenty degress in the daytime, 13 at night. But it was nice all the same. All the best for the Christmas season and Happy New Year.
Dear Duchess;
Nice Lead.
You had me at,
"...ever changing seasons".
You made me miss my kids, man..(sniff) When I got to "Snow forts and snow fights".
WOW! And you just like, thumbnailed me, with "Snowmobiling." (I gotta get that app!)
Then you re-framed the national brochure for the I LUV CANADA campaign in gorgeous prose. Canada - A Natural Choice for the Winter Olympics...that...is superbly written!
Well, you've got it all and win the gold.
Now I'm gunna mush my way back through the slush...
HaHaHa..JK. I live in Arizona, man. Hi of 70. No chance of anything but more sun for the Homeys.
And it's an hour to get to ski-ville (Flagstaff). So THERE!
Luv your Hub. A very nice read.

P.S. My wife says I should apologize for the so there. sorry.
Great hub.
I have wanted a pair of those mitts since they became available. Makes me homesick, a bit.
From a Cdn ex-pat
Oh, that brought me back to when we were kids. The snow forts, the snowball fights, and going down the hill on the sled. We have the same kind of weather in upstate New York! Thanks, Duchess.
What a lovely hub. It included everything I love about Canada in the winter. I agree with June, great mitts. I think they were available at some Cdn bank.
I especially hated digging out and then the snow plow coming by and starting all over again. Thanks for the laugh and bringing to mind some fond memories.
Very entertaining! It actually did snow here 10 days ago - a very rare occurance. People here don't know how to drive on snow, so only a light fall can cause traffic chaos.
Hi Duchess, oh that is still too cold for me 3C, haha. I dont think I can play those games but then if snow is there and I am dress appropriately, why not, I love the snow and I am happy to learn about these games in winter,
Thank you Duchess and Happy holidays, Maita
Duchess, I recently went to my first hockey game here in Kansas. It was awesome, as long as a puck doesn't pop up and hit you in the face! :) We also just had a winter storm, and a white Christmas, which we haven't had in years. Snow is fun, but hard to drive my little sports car in lol. Nice hub!
Loved reminiscing about the snow and cold! Winter is such a beautiful (and often unappreciated) season. I miss it! But thanks for sharing the cold weather with me! I've never been on a hay ride in the snow - sounds like fun.
Delightful hub with such beautiful pictures…My favorites---a Blanket of Snow & Falling Snow. Thanks for sharing the beauty of Canada with us…
Okay - I'm from souther California born and raised - and I LOVE snow and I love anything associated with snow. I am a musician by birth but I love sports...yikes - Oh Canada! My husband grew up in Michigan but crossed over to Ontario all the time, played hockey - got me into sports - and now the dog sledding thing. I love all seasons but winter is my favorite probably because I did not have to endure it. I love the pics and I love the hub....I'm hoping for more snow while everyone here is groaning 'no'....sigh. Great hub - I may just have to look at it once per day for the next 2-4 months!!! It just stays colder than heck here and we get not enough snow for me but way enough for my Bob!
These are some great pictures and perfect timing...My "Our Winter Wonderland" is no comparison to these Canadian pictures...well done...When will Canada get a Winter Classic?
I am new to you and an Indian; I was charmed on reading the article which is so nicely written with pictures as if I am feeling the sensation of cold and simultaneously the pleasure of adventurous journey in the bed of snow. It is wonderful and amazing. Thanks.
I returned the favor and linked this hub to a PA Winter Wonderland...
Duchess,
Your hub on Canada was wonderful. Thank you.
What a nice reminder that the cold doesn't have to be the "horror show" that I tend to conjur up when I know our New England weather will be getting one of those blasts of an air mass from Canada. :) (My friends and I were big for tobogganing for several years there - absolutely loved it, although we almost ended up in a river one night. :) ).
Wow, beautiful. I really hope I get to see Canada some day. Its gorgeous in the Summer and in the Winter.
I didn't know the Winter Olympics were next year - will look out for it.
Happy 2010.
Best Wishes xx
A great narration and it makes Canada look wonderful. Certainly, it gives the lie to the old joke that 'Canada is absolutely terrific and a fabulous place to visit - but not for the whole weekend!' I can retell this (I think!) because my sister is a Canadian citizen!!
Anyone know any more (favourable) jokes about Canada?
Canada is really a heaven like destination for Holidays.and i recommend Canada visit for everyone
I love Canada Duchess. The only thing that holds me back from moving there is my health. Congrats on you award, most deserving. The one from votes on AEvans' newest endeavor. Happy New year to you.
Thanks for the great Canadian hub. I lived in the mountains of NC and it get's Canadian there a little too much. Thanks
I feel like getting back on the ski slopes and also going mountain climbing again! Haven't done either in very many years now ...
Wonderful read, Duchess. And the photos are awesome. As your fans have said, memories come back.
It used to be that here in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, we kids skated on frozen ponds. That is no more...something has happened, and the ponds don't freeze like they used to, nor do we have the snow accumulations of the past. However, we do have plenty of bitter, raw, wet, and icy weather, none of which I'm fond of!
You have truly painted a picture of a special winter wonderland, one that I guess I'm going to have to go to Canada to experience.
Thumbs up.
Good job, one thumbs-up from me.
Great hub! I think if it was just warm all the time, you wouldn't be able to truly appreciate summer or any of the other seasons. Time for some hot chocolate :)
As a child growing up in Wisconsin we enjoyed all the delights that you portrayed...the snow forts and fights; sledding and tobogganing; ice skating, etc. And moving back for 4 years as an adult...the driving and shoveling, etc. Fresh snow is so beautiful and memories will have to serve (except for the exciting recent snow day in Houston, Texas that was most unusual, of course.) Really enjoyed this hub!
I have never been a fan of winter vacation, but after reading this I feel like I have missed out on something. I was in Canada this past summer. For next winter vacation, we will consider Canada! Thanks for the details.
Hey from sunny Israel,Wow!
Have Snowballs - the cupcakes that are covered with coconut. Blue colored punch or juice - pin the carrot on the snowman - have some kind of treasure hunt by having them follow the "snowballs" (cotton balls)
The love you have for Canada is what you have reflected in your words, the pictures are beautiful and I hope that one day I will visit just because you wrote about it. Spring and Summer will be good for me, unfortunately I cannot stand to be cold. lololo :)
Awe inspiring and travel inspiring, great shots, Duchess
Beautiful hub! I've actually only been to Canada in the summer. I've been to Niagara Falls (the USA side and Canadian side - the Canadian side has a better view). I've always wanted to visit Quebec, it has to be stunning this time of year.
Nice winter photos. I especially like photo of the 2010 winter Olympics mittens, I just received a pair from one of my Canadian friends as a hint to go visit during the winter olympics
Unfortunately, my partner can't get the time off work. But plans are in motion to try and visit in the summer.
Ahhhhh Vancouver. I started visiting that magical place when I was 18. Favorite city in the world.
In fact, I told my wife never to let me vacation there; I'll never come home. :)
Fabulous hub, Duchess.
"O Canada"...my country of birth, how delightful of you to elaborate on my country!
I have to say, I went on a four and half month travel road trip-drove to Niagra Falls-up through Montana to Banf-and then drove through BC to get to Alaska. Of all the pictures all over the U.S. and Canada, everyone comments on the beauty of Canada! Just beautiful and majestic!
Great Hub!
No-just my photobook album ! They used to be on Snapfish but something happenened and they are no more. :(
As an Edmontonian, I can relate to your hub. I love our winters cold and all. Some may think I am crazy but I will take -30, anytime over +30. I can always add layers to keep warm. There is so much to do in Alberta in the Winter! I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.
Don't get me wrong I love to Travel, and experience new things. But I stay put for our winters. There is nothing like the first good snowfall, and giving the kids their first face wash of the year!
You and I share at least one thing in common—lots of snow. I don't think I'm , perhaps, as fond of it as you are though. Shoveling, plowing...ugh! But what can you do?
A good read indeed--no rhyme intended. Brings me back to the days on the G.M hill! although, I don't have the "luxury" of having to travel far into work on days like those, tough life I lead ;)
Duchess this hub is fabulous. Makes me all proud to be a Canack. (Now if there was a way of warming up that snow and wind a few degrees life would be 100% perfect).
Love the hub and your choice pics too
kindest regards Zsuzsy
Very Nice Hub,Lived in New York, as a Young Lad, Enjoyed alot of the Snow adventures as you so nicely shared in detail. brought back a lot of fond memories, Canada also has a two week train ride across all of canada its very popular I hear.Thank You again for a really enjoyable Hub. Ed
I love the snow and the cold and tobogganing. I have been 90 mph on a snowmobile. As a native Michigander living in Florida for 18 years I miss winter. Maybe I'll come back.
I enjoyed your article. It brought back a lot of fond memories. Thanks for the fine read.
And yet it's a hundred and ten degrees in the summer (and I wish I was joking.....) :-)
Surprisingly England is getting a lot of snow too at the moment - it's fun for a while but does restrict movememnt a bit.
I was just there for eight days around New Years Day! Two feet of snow fell during my visit and I loved it!
Beautiful pictures, here in UK it looks similar now :D
We don't normally have serious snow but this year in the UK we are overwhelmed. Office girl. http://www.netplumb.co.uk
It was springlike here on the east coast until a couple of days ago... could stand a few more "wintry" Canadian days like that, if we can get them
Hi Duchess. St. John's has crazily varied weather (as you may know). It is not uncommon to be plus eight on Christmas Day, and minus thirteen on New Year's (I remember that one year). Unfortunately, it can swing between 20 degrees and 4 degrees in August too, within a week :(.
I am also originally British. I lived in London for four years, and we had snow *once*, and that was gone by the end of the day...
what an interesting hub. Looks a little too cold for my tastes though.
great hub, thanks for sharing.
Canada eh? There are a lot of my countrymen who live in Canada and they say it's one of the best countries to work in. Don't know about the snow though, I'm a little thin-skinned and gets cold easily :). Congrats on the 100 HubScore Duchess. Well-deserved!
i enjoyed this hub, especially the pics! Iv'e always wanted to go to canada, i plan to in 2012. I can't wait! Especially as i am currently living in bloody desert country Australia, 600km inland. It was 44 degrees here yesterday, I dream of snow!!
Great hub; wished we got snow in Ireland.
Off to Canada we will go for sure, one day soon! What a lovely hub on winter's wonders! It's been kinda warm here in Hawaii, am missing our winter in the mainland!
DuchessO'blunt-- love the pics, makes me wish we had that here... except that Vancouver has rain and oh rain and wait for it more rain!
Hi,
I just want to say,you got some very beautiful pictures.Bye
Enjoyed the hub. Loved the snow pics. Believe it or not, we have snow days in Georgia, too. It only takes a dusting, and school is closed.
I never touch the snow before. It would be nice to see and touch snow directly. Just information my country is a tropical country, only two season there are rainy season and dry season. I am glad to go to Canada someday.
Breathtakingly beautiful! I've never been to Canada.
Wow.
...
...
Breathtaking! I would love to go to Canada, those photographs are simply beautiful.
What a great hub Duchess,
I guess I can't really complain after reading what happens in Canada. You should read my Minnesota storm hub I just wrote. Our metrodome collapsed after all the snow. I love your humour. Great pics too.
