Celebrating My Mother
This Hub is dedicated to my mother, who turns 70 in just a few days. I wanted to honor her and at the same time allow the world to see what a wonderful person she is.
My mom is one of the most down to earth, honest and fun people I know. I realize how fortunate I am to be able to say that my mom is one of my very best friends. I just needed to say that because I don't want others to misinterpret the story and finally, the poem I am sharing with you.
This is my mom, as she is. No embellishing, no apologies, and straight from the heart.
We gave mom a Surprise 50th birthday in which we spent many hours writing and practicing a play which depicted her life as seen through the eyes of her children. Sadly, I cannot find those pictures.
We celebrated her 65th with a Hill Billy Birthday party because it is just so "mom". She absolutely loved it, and smiled about it for many months after. Some of those pictures I have shared here. We do much as a family, and when we do something, we go all out. That means costumes for everyone to fit the bill, and props as we can find them or make them. I hope you enjoy as I share this with you.
For her 70th, because it is another milestone, I write this hub to wish her all the best. As a side benefit I get to share with you my mother.

Happy 65th Mom
A mother's a mother,
It will never change.
The roles she must play
present quite a range.
Nurse, chauffeur, cook,
teacher and friend.
A mother's job
just never ends.
You're hard when you must be,
and soft when you can.
And during each birth,
wish you were a man.
But only just briefly
for there's naught to compare,
To holding each newborn
with soft fuzzy hair,
And knowing you carried them
through to this day.
Knowing you'd be there
to help them find their way.
When life throws them curves
and hurdles to jump.
When night time scares
go bumpity bump.
When something has hurt them
when they're happy too,
You'll be there to help them
with old friends and new.
And when they grow older
with kids of their own,
You'll watch justice at work
as they try to atone,
For being a brat
as kids sometimes can be,
And learn how tough
parenting can be.
You'll be there then
as you've been through the years,
To wipe away hurts
and listen to fears.
Well now you're a Nana,
a great one to boot.
How does it feel
to be such an old coot?
To know that the multitude
seen here today,
Started eons ago
when you lay down to play?
We chose an intimate gathering today,
To wish you a very happy birthday
You've always claimed
to be an old country bumpkin,
So here today
from a country fair win,
On their very own stage
they so proudly stand,
Your very own
Hill Billy boogie Band.
So listen carefully,
you may actually hear
The familiar sounds
of an old birthday cheer
As we've gathered together
the family gifts,
To bring a smile to your lips,
to your heart a lift.
With Love from all your many offspring.

OMG! I love the pictures! Is that really a "hillbilly pinata"?? LOL
I want to wish your Mom a Happy 70th this year! We celebrate our birthdays almost on the same day! :-)
Love, Jo (Lady Go Go)
Wow! What a great poem!!! I especially love those chimes!!!
Too bad Jo will not be close by for her birthday!
Duchess,
I think this is great and love the poem. Time passes so quickly. May the two of you have many joyful years ahead.
Beautiful, Duchess. Just Beautiful!!
Thanks for Sharing Duchess.. What a nice tribute to your mom and moms everywhere. Love the hillbilly theme!
I enjoyed this story. Thanks for sharing. I got a secret for you: My Mom really is a hillbilly!
what a wonderful hub!
Your mom sounds as if she was cut from the same cloth as mine. My mom was a country girl, born on a couch, and can tell more than one story of being sent out to the yard to go kill a chicken for supper....nothing phases my mom.
We are blessed to have been raised by such wonderful women.
You express your love and admiration for your mom beautifully.
Just lovely! What a great tribute to your mother. I was born a hillbilly myself lol from the Appalachian area of Virginia, so I know all about the attitude anyway. We were never really poor because my granddaddy was a coal miner, and we always had indoor plumbing while I've been living. Still, my great uncle never got it in his family till the 70's. Our whole family (a huge one!) migrated up to Ohio on the "hillbilly highway" in the early 60's to find work at places like GM and Frigidaire, though some went back and we still have family there.
God Bless your mother and I see that she has a wonderful family.
God
I'll have to get her one for her next birthday—73rd that will be.
Great hub! Reminds me in many ways of my mom - she's going to be 80 this year, and is going strong. Can you imagine she has less gray hair than I? It's a different story, however, when it comes to the gray matter! :)
So nice to hear about a daughter and mother being best of friends. I have always had that special bond with my mother as well. Really enjoyed the sentiments expressed in your poem for her special birthday.
So sweet, I am glad that you still have your mother with you and treasure her. Lucky both of you!
Love it! Love it! Love it!
Thank you thank you thank you!
There is nothing more precious then these collections of family moments. Happy belated Birthday Duchess's MOM hope your day was a lot of fun and many many returns.
Awesome hub and great poem Duchess OBlunt. My Mom was my best friend too, moments like this I miss her the most.
kindest regards Zsuzsy
I just love this hub-it's gorgeous ,and sincere-and it makes me a little sad that I no longer have my mum-another no nonsense country woman.
Hi Duchess, I am a fan and I want to apologise up front for using the word hill billy in a different context to yours in my hub. Your mum seems wonderful and zZI respect her culture. I don't like other kinds of hill billys though. Especially mean ones, ones wearing corporate uniforms and robbing people. Something your mum would probably not have approved of. Kind regards Bearclaw
I really got a bang out of this, I bet cha mom did too. Haha great pictures! CC
Awesome hub, sounds like you have a wonderful mother and this was a very beautiful tribute to her. You are very lucky and blessed to have such a wonderful person as your Mom.
This is just wonderful, and what a great dedication to your mom! A Hill Billy party, excellent idea :)
Great tribute Duchess... we got to celebrate my mum's 75 birthday just before she passed on.... (brain tumor). It was such a great time to honour her and provide great memories for now... thanks for taking me back. Cheers
Dags the Drover.
Ah, how NICE! And it seems that YOU are a chip off the 65 year old block! Wonderful!
Thanks for sharing such fun and togetherness!
Duchess, I just came across this hub and read it with pleasure. What a delightful family you have and such a lovely mother. The Hillbilly party was such a fantastic celebration idea! Thank you for sharing such fun. It is so wonderful to see such love expressed to a mother. And I love your poem!
Too cute!! The trash bag pinata caused me to make a noise that others stood to identify. Coffee and snot do not mix, just to let you know...
Wouldn't I just love to be at one of your shindigs!! :)TR
De nada Duchess..no extra charge!! Hey...I put a hub up that you might enjoy...A Box Full of Chocolates...it's...a little different...no rating or eval's necessary...go check it out...
