Success Is - What Does Being Successful Mean to Me

Success
Success means different things to different people. For some it means fame and fortune. I prefer to measure success the same way Booker T. Washington does: “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.”
- HubPage Success - 5 Lessons from Failure
Hubpage success is not only about making money from Hubpages. Hubpage success means different things to different people. Most people who take the time to write want their work to be read, so a large number...
Failures
Success comes to many because they overcome their failures and continue on, picking themselves up, brushing themselves off, and facing the world again - perhaps with a different approach.
“Failure is success if we learn from it” [Malcolm Forbes]
That sounds so trite! Who in their right mind doesn’t get angry or upset when something you have worked very hard at fails? Not me. I get angry, I get ugly, I’m hard to live with and I want to throw things. Been there, done that - could probably write the book - but who hasn’t?
Get Over It
How long it takes to “get over it” depends on you. Each failure hurts. Allow yourself to wallow in your self pity for a while. Find someone who will listen to you as you rant. Then get over it and get on with life.
A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him. [David Brinkley]
Some are driven to find the cure for diabetes, cancer or Polio. When those driven people succeed, we all benefit. Some people find their success in exploring and discovering new worlds, or in developing new technology. All of these things are wonderful and thank God they are driven to succeed in their chosen fields because most often you and I benefit from their success as much, if not more, than they do.
Some people find success in building the tallest building, making the most money, creating an empire, or becoming famous. Their drive to find that success is often challenged and they have had to face their own failures and pick themselves up many times to get there. If you had the opportunity to ask any of them, I'm guessing they would all tell you exactly that. So don't feel you are alone.

Visions of Grandeur
Not everyone has visions of grandeur. Many people are happy to go to bed at night with food in their belly and a roof over their head and consider that success.
My mother would laugh out loud if you told her you thought she was successful. Most of her life was spent looking after the basic needs of her family, “But that’s just life” she would say. I know of people whose lives she has touched, encouraged and embolden just because she is who she is - and that is success - ask any one of them and they would agree.
Mom taught us all by example that success is being able to say no to those things that are not essential to your health (mentally, physically and spiritually), so that you can provide for your family. We have all learned that - well maybe not all but I AM trying.

Leave Your Legacy
I have to say that I am one of the people without visions of grandeur. Sure, I would love to be recognized as the all time best writer ever to inhabit planet earth. But you are probably right there with me in that wish and I'm pretty sure you are the better writer.....so, back to I'm one of those people without a lofty vision of grandeur.
That's not to say the legacy I leave will not be a good one - at least I hope! I truly believe that everyone makes a difference regardless of our position, wealth or fame.
I was once approached to be interviewed and was given a simple list of questions to answer. I'm guessing they wanted to find out what wonderful gems I was going to be able to pass on to their readers. I'm pretty sure my answers either sounded trite or too simple for their tastes. Because the interview never happened.
They wanted to know what my dreams are and my definition of success, and what I had done in my life to achieve them. Ooops, I answered honestly - how utterly innocent I was!
I had two goals as a young girl. To get married and have a family. I managed to obtain my goals. Both of them. I have what I always dreamed of as a young girl. See, no visions of grandeur.
I want my legacy to be that I am known to have a love of God, Country and Family; that I speak the truth, know right from wrong, and work hard to be the best that I can be.
My idea of success is to be able to teach those values [to my children], inspire creativity, encourage them to dream as big as they want to, and to be worthy of the love I have from them and from my husband.
So just like my mother has left her legacy - which was handed down by her mother - I want to leave my children with inspiration, common sense and the ability to balance them both. I hope I am not asking too much of myself. I have some big footsteps to follow.
Here's to your success - whatever that means to you. May you pick yourself up, brush yourself off, and get on with it. Take those bricks that have been thrown at you and build your success, your legacy.

Thanks for great reading this morning.
Just write for the sake of writing, Duchess! Write for the moment and write for life!
Merry Christmas!
Dohn
Thanks for the great read this afternoon. I especially like the quotes. You must have put a lot of work into this one (not like you don't always). I needed a little motivational pick me up.
Thank you. I need the inspiration this morning, This has helped.
Beautifully said. Everyone should FAVORITE this hub page.
Wonderful, wonderful, I loved it. I especially liked the Brinkley quote, "Make a foundation with the bricks thrown at you."
Very inspiring hub, thank you!
Great hub! I love how you write!
A very good hub with great advice…I loved the quote, “Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure. [George Edward Woodberry].”
Regarding success, I rather like Henry Kissinger's statement that: 'Each success only buys an admission ticket to a more difficult problem.' Something upon which to muse?
Great article different have a different meaning of success. I think if anybody achieve a any goal of their life that it called a success.
For all the hard working people out there - this is an important article. One of the items I love about Hub Pages is the scoring which motivates me to try harder, improve content, etc... but the reward is helping others. Very well stated. Many of us baby boomers, the "legacy" is the item we now must achieve. Thank you very much for a great article!
Duchess OBlunt-
Great read, with very valid points-and lots of food for thought!I suppose some of our views on personal success would be influenced by whether we are 'the glass half full or half empty ' people.
This was a very inspiring post. You put a lot of thought into writing it.
Your information is excellent and encouraging. It seems that your thinking is much like mine.
Great hub Duchess, and it's a strange coincidence that only yesterday I was airing my views about what a successful man might be like. Now don't ask me to write it all down here!
But I must contradict one of your statements: I don't think you could ever get so angry as to get ugly and be hard to live with and want to throw things.
You know you've made and cultivated a happy home - there are words to that effect on your profile if I remember right. One can also see a glow of happiness on your face. Believe me, you are a very successful person ... at least in my eyes!
Very good posting, good hub.
Wanted to let you know that I put a link in my page to this hub also. The articles do flow together. Thank you
That was an awesome piece Duchess. You reminded me of aa few things I forgot. Thanks and God Bless!
great dear. it is very inspiring.
I particularly like the David Brinkley quote (about the bricks). Oh - to live a life in which the road to success has already been paved; but if my road to success is ever finished being built it will definitely be built from thrown bricks.
Without any of those thoughts of grandeur I'm not sure I've ever really even thought in terms of success. To me, "success", is how other people may presume to measure us and our lives. The way I measure my own life, I think, is more in individual achievements and in "wholeness".
Your mother and my mother simply knew what real success was. My mother would have simply said "Oh thats just common sense" and my grandmother would have said "Oh--bah-humbug."because they had success with---HAPPINESS. loved this read!
I loved the references to your mother. Reminded me a lot of my own mom. :)
As always - INSPIRING! Thank you for sharing so much of yourself and inspiring so many to re-evaluate life's goals.
I found your article very inspiring. There are always times we wish we could be a "star" but we never know how many peoples lives we touch just by being ourselves and that is truly a tribute to our success.
Thanks for being reminded of those things.
You have the ink of salvation
We will never know what will happen when our time is up. We are not in the position to dictate on what we want others for our legacy. That's what we are here for on earth- do the best things we are committed to do in anticipation of best things for our memorial. That's success and our legacy is inseparably pinned on it.
Duchess Blunt, you are already a success in your own right. Your legacy is the whole you- in all grandeur. Great hub reminder, nice to be good and do good all the time.
Appreciate your articles very much.
Hello Duchess,
I needed this bit of encouragement this morning. Loved the quotes!
Thankyou. At present, I have been feeling that my life is just a connect the dots from one drama to the next. It is lovely to give that encouraging word, or receive a smile from someone when you really need it. Sometimes success is not what we are told it is... Lovely quotes, thankyou again.
Happy New Year Duchess. Here's to your success :).
Duchess OBlunt, Very wise successful hub! Full of insight and optimism! Thank you for sharing, Blessings!

I read your article, beautifully expressed thoughts....
Wonderful article, Duchess. Thanks for taking the time to compose this heartening reminder. It made me catch my breath and drop my shoulders enough to say, "Success? For me, it is was it is and will be what it will be." Time to get on with living and not bother thinking about "success" anymore.
Duchess OBlunt - Do you think there could be a greater purpose in life than just being successful ? Shouldnt we first know whats worth being successful in so that we follow that ?
I loved the Hub, Duchess. The quotes are great, especially Williams, Patton and Wilson. Thanks for the excellent read.
Enjoyed reading your marvelous definition(s) of success. Your quotes were terrific and indeed inspiring. My prayer is that I, too, will leave the kind of legacy you described. Thanks.
I couldn`t agree more with this hub, Duchess! The quote I liked the most was: "Success isn't a result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire" It doesn`t mean it is the best, they are all so good, but that one ignited my flint, you get me, right? Thank you for sharing this. See? your mom did good with you, for you have encouraged me to keep on moving forward!
Warm regards,
Mystique
Duchess, this hub is awesome, one of the best I have seen in awhile. Wonderful work. I will be adding this hub to my list of favorites. Thanks so much for this :)
This is my preferred quote: "Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure." Beautiful hub, very interesting and so right. If you like I'd put a link here from my last hub on Success, if it's ok for you.
And I stumbled this. :)

Publishing a Hub is sucess to me. I have been thinking on this and what sucess is to everyone and what is considered success. Enjoyed this very much gave me some answers.
Thanks for this great Hub! I enjoyed reading the quotes -- gives you something to really think about.
Very refreshing hub...I remmber reading a quote by Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, Educator and Minister who said " It is'nt a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for." I think about this quote often, especially when setting personal goals. Thanks for reminding me to retain my passion for achieving my goals in life.
Hi Duchess, I liked this article. Very well put, and a lot of inspiring quotes. Sometimes when you get knocked down it can make you come back stronger. Also, people should be judged on were they start from. If someone has been at a disadvantage and make modest improvements this can be seen as success. Michael.
Just being alive makes us a success!
Ah no, you are definitely the better writer. 'Get over it' can be a big ask at the time, but at the end of the day if you take action there will be great changes for the better.
Here's to your success, whatever that may be for you. Looks to me as if you've made it. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this hub.
I'm just a passer-by.
Duchess OBlunt Thanks for the great and well searched article.
