The Planet Earth and The Blue Planet - A Review
I don’t often write reviews about movies because I watch very little TV and go to see a movie even less than that. This however, is one that is worth a moment or two of my time to review.
The Making of the Planet Earth Series
Years of political negotiations to obtain permission to film some of the world’s most amazing places, and literally months of filming to get that one shot that might last two minutes.
Untold hours of research to learn about these places, animals and these forces of nature.
More negotiating. This time with guides and translators.
Enduring the dirtiest places, the most disgusting bugs crawling all over you, tight squeezes, high places, deep dark and dank places, dessert sun, ice, wind and rain and untold hours of waiting.
More negotiating to get the funding for a project this large.
Writing script that is laden with intelligent information from the researchers who have spent years on these subjects.
Spending hours in cramped, drafty and dangerous little shelters while wild animals roam freely all about you and your only protection is a camera that you can throw at them. (just kidding)
More negotiations with governments and agencies you never knew existed to allow you to use the film they have graciously allowed you to shoot.
Finding just the right person to narrate the brilliant script.
Producing music spectacular enough to showcase the amazing footage you have in the can.
More negotiations with film directors to use those “cuts” they felt were not necessary for the film.
Putting it all together after years of traveling the world.
My take on The Planet Earth and The Blue Planet
We received the CD collection of both for Christmas. I have only watched the first two CD’s so far but am completely awed by the spectacular scenery, never before seen look at some animal behavior and environments that I’m sure others have heard about, but I have not.
Brilliant minds are behind this collection, and we benefit from years of work. If you are given the opportunity to watch these CD’s, may I suggest you watch them on the largest HD TV Screen you have available to you. The bigger the better. Surround sound would also add to the experience. And if you get the chance to watch any one of these CD’s, be sure to take the time to watch the Plant Earth Diaries at the end of each section.
The earth is a big place, and the circle of life is never ending, even in places you can’t imagine there being any life at all. It amazes me each time I watch it.
It is stunning. It is breathtaking and it is brilliant.
- How do you see earth 50 years from now?
I wrote about this when I answered the hub question, By extending the life span of humans are we creating a problem for the planet... - How to Save our Planet Earth
In 1992 World Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, getting rid of pollution was the main agenda as well as making our planet healthy amid industrial progress. However the ratification and implementation of this...

Who hasn't wanted some extra protein, huh? Yow! Thanks Duchess!
Great article, we have a book warehouse in our town and every year they have a huge sale. I picked up the Planet Earth, the complete series at this sale brand new for 3 dollars. It is the blue ray set and I love it. I also don't watch much TV but this I will sit down for. It is an amazing series and I am so glad I picked this up at the sale. I almost didn't.
Hi Duchess - Shows like these, football, baseball, and the news. Those are what I like. Fishtiger surely did luck out !
Gus :-)))
This is indeed a brilliant series and a very informative one. And its so true that people are hooked when they see the brilliant outcome and don't think much about the behind the scene aspects so thanks for highlighting that.
Duchess, you sold me - I'm buying it! I had no idea of what into this, but of course, it would require awesome dedication and artistry to produce something of this magnitude! I have friends who have seen it and love it - now it's my turn!
Do you think these are kid friendly? I've looked at these and never picked them up because I thought it might be too much for a six-year-old to sit through. Thanks for a good Hub. I am going to look at these again.
We are avid national geographic channel watchers. Film makers do put in a lot of work for practically a gamble. That's what I call dedication.
This is interesting. I'd love to see it.
Glad I read the Hub. Regards.
Duchess well done. I love the Blue Planet DVD's. Hey, it's coz I am animal lover. Thank you very much for the lovely hub. It brights my day. Thank you - Lizzy
Thanks for the enticing movie review. As avid movie buffs and animal lovers we will definitely seek these out. Love this kind of stuff.
Thanks, Duchess. I just ordered the complete BBC series with Amazon. Total, with shipping, came to $20.93, which seems like a deal, and this sounds like something I'd LOVE to own. Thanks again, and make SURE you get credit from Amazon for it.
I always loved the Planet Earth series because of how beautiful and stunning the imagery was. You described it perfectly!
Great hub!
another hub by you and another mist read, this is awesome of course bookmarked and Stumbled Upon!
Oh we have both these collections. They are so so great! I actually got them for us to watch with my kids and the kids have loved them. There is also a board game with a dvd for the Planet Earth series which we have had fun with.
I've wanted to get these for someone in my family who loves this kind of stuff but the only review I had was that of the one "Planet Earth" themselves put out. Thankfully now I have a reference and review! Nice piece, Duchess!
Duchess...
This is a great review! I love it because I am a Nature lover.
I do watch NatGeo, Animal Planet, Discovery and History channels. I am amazed at all the beauty God has placed around us, and always remember that when my "human syndrome" gets me in overdrive. Knowing how great is the planet we live on is more than enough reason to work together as one race!
Warm blessings to you,
Al
Hy Duchess. I have this series on DVD. I got it for a present. It is amazing, it is about life on earth after all. WHile some bits are not for the eyes of the kids when friends and family bring 'em round, it's still amazing no matter how many times you see it! Seeing millions of fish swarm in the ocean, then seeing birds swarm in the sky. Then shoppers swarming at the sales! LOL! Life on earth, there you are! : )

I love these series and yes, the people that labored through to make these films deserve a lot of credit. I'm sure they didn't get paid much either! You did a wonderful job of selling this to me ;)
